Here is the flag of Ghana...just thought it would be good to teach you a little bit about where we are! (the real flag does not say 'Ghana' though like this one!).
Ghana is a country in Western Africa....it borders the Gulf of Guinea/Atlantic Ocean to the south, Coat d'Ivorie(Ivory Coast) to the west, Togo to the east and Burkina Faso to the north. Ghana is a Christian country and they have a 4 day weekend for Easter this weekend! English is the national language although there are many dialects of different tribal languages that people speak. In the North, we found there were less people that spoke English. We also found out that you can ask questions about directions when you are driving (the maps are only so good and things are not so well marked always) and you can get several different answers so ask a couple times and go with the majority!!!! Our guide who was with us when we did the hippo river canoe trip had never been out of his area--the "big" northern city of Wa was a far as he had traveled in the country. And many people here in Accra have never traveled up to the northern part of the country either (it makes sense...not easy without a car...and no reason to go if their digs are here!). There are "tro-tros" all over which are like little buses/vans. They get packed with people and sometimes you either see a lot of luggage and items tied on top or on some occasions you see a lot of people up there!!!
The people in Ghana are very friendly--when you smile at them they just light up and smile back! Everyone enjoys when "Abruni" come ("white people" it basically means). They all want to "shake" your hand--they do this shake and snap your finger at the end...or a knuckle bop if you prefer! They really enjoy seeing the kids and are very entertained and curious about Zachary's red hair too. We have enjoyed meeting so many of the wonderful people of Ghana and look forward to the rest of our visit! This trip is amazing...thank you Lupton family! By the way, for those of you who do not know, Donna and I have known each other for about 24 years now. What an amazing friendship which I'm forever thankful for thanks to the good ol camp days!!!!! I so enjoy getting to spend time with her entire amazing family!!!!
